Methodology
This FFMI calculator estimates your natural muscular potential based on your fat-free mass, height, body-fat percentage, and available research on elite natural athletes.
The estimate is designed to show how muscular you may be able to become naturally when reaching a very lean, well-developed physique. For the most meaningful results, your body-fat percentage should be relatively low. Estimates become less reliable at higher body-fat levels.
For men, the calculator can also estimate the relative development potential of individual body parts. For women, the available research is more limited, so the calculator focuses primarily on whole-body muscular potential. A measuring tape may be useful when taking the required body measurements.
How the Estimate Is Calculated
The men’s maximum muscular potential model is based partly on research by Casey Butt, who studied the physical characteristics of highly muscular natural bodybuilders. More recent versions of these formulas use a larger sample and aim to provide more generalized estimates than some of the older formulas available online.
Older muscular-potential formulas were developed from relatively small groups of exceptionally gifted bodybuilders. Some calculations also included multiple body measurements to predict individual muscle size, which may lead to estimates that are too optimistic for the average person.
For this reason, our calculator uses a more conservative approach designed to provide a realistic estimate rather than suggesting that everyone can reach the same level of muscularity as an exceptional genetic outlier.
Why Body Fat Matters
FFMI is based on fat-free mass, so body-fat percentage has a major effect on the calculation.
For highly lean men, approximately 4–12% body fat, the estimate can provide a more useful indication of muscular development. At higher body-fat levels, the calculation becomes less reliable because additional body weight may come from fat rather than muscle.
This is why FFMI should be interpreted alongside your body-fat percentage rather than used as a standalone measurement.
Natural Muscularity and Scientific Research
To estimate how rare different levels of muscularity may be, researchers have examined studies involving high-level bodybuilders and athletes whose natural status was supported by drug testing or other evidence.
Research including Kouri et al. (1995), Mäestu et al. (2010), and Chappell et al. (2018) provides useful data on FFMI and muscular development in trained populations.
By combining these datasets, researchers can estimate an average FFMI and the variation around that average. Height-adjusted FFMI can then be used to better compare muscularity between people of different heights.
Importantly, body-composition measurements are not perfectly accurate. Differences between measurement methods can introduce errors, so statistical corrections can help separate genuine differences in muscularity from measurement uncertainty.
Women’s Natural Muscular Potential
Research on women’s maximum natural muscular potential is more limited than research on men. One study estimated that women’s maximum FFMI may be around 20, or roughly 80% of the corresponding male value.
This difference is consistent with broader research showing that men and women can experience substantial muscle growth relative to their starting levels.
Because available data for women are more limited, natural-potential estimates for women should be viewed as approximate rather than an exact genetic ceiling.

FFMI is a useful way to compare muscularity, but it cannot determine your exact genetic potential. Genetics, training history, nutrition, age, measurement accuracy, and body-fat percentage can all influence the result.

Research suggests that a small calorie surplus can help maximize muscle growth while minimizing unnecessary fat gain. A common approach is to consume around 10% more calories than your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE).
For most people, this means consuming approximately 16–18 calories per pound of body weight per day, depending on activity level, metabolism, and individual goals.

To support muscle growth while keeping fat gain under control, aim for a balanced intake of protein, carbohydrates, and fats:
