FFMI Calculator Formula
FFMI Calculator Formula
The Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) is calculated using the following formula:
FFMI = Lean Body Mass (kg) ÷ Height² (m²)
Where:
– Lean Body Mass (LBM) = Body Weight × (1 − Body Fat Percentage ÷ 100)
– Height is measured in meters.
Combined Formula
FFMI = [Body Weight × (1 − Body Fat % ÷ 100)] ÷ Height²
This formula estimates your lean muscle mass relative to your height, making FFMI a more accurate measure of muscularity than BMI because it excludes body fat.
How to Calculate Fat-Free Mass
Fat-Free Mass (FFM) is calculated by subtracting your body fat from your total body weight.
Formula
Fat-Free Mass (FFM) = Body Weight × (1 − Body Fat Percentage ÷ 100)
Example
– Body Weight: 80 kg
– Body Fat: 20%
FFM = 80 × (1 − 20 ÷ 100)
FFM = 80 × 0.80 = 64 kg
How to Calculate Muscle Mass
There is no simple formula to calculate muscle mass directly. It is typically estimated using body composition analysis methods such as Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), or skinfold measurements.
If you know your Lean Body Mass (LBM), you can estimate muscle mass using the following formula:
Estimated Muscle Mass = Lean Body Mass × Muscle Percentage
Where:
– Lean Body Mass (LBM) = Body Weight × (1 − Body Fat % ÷ 100)
– Muscle Percentage is usually estimated by a body composition test.
Example
– Body Weight: 80 kg
– Body Fat: 20%
– Lean Body Mass: 80 × (1 − 0.20) = 64 kg
– Estimated Muscle Percentage: 50%
Estimated Muscle Mass = 64 × 0.50 = 32 kg
This means the estimated muscle mass is 32 kg.
How to Calculate Muscle Mass Percentage
How to Calculate Muscle Mass Percentage
Muscle Mass Percentage is the proportion of your total body weight that consists of muscle. It can be estimated using the following formula:
Muscle Mass Percentage = (Muscle Mass ÷ Total Body Weight) × 100
Example
– Muscle Mass: 32 kg
– Body Weight: 80 kg
Muscle Mass Percentage = (32 ÷ 80) × 100 = 40%
This means that 40% of your total body weight is muscle. Muscle mass percentage is commonly used to assess body composition, monitor fitness progress, and evaluate overall muscular development.
